Church planting in Nagoya, Japan: the 16×30 initiative

Reaching Japan is currently praying for and working towards starting 16 churches in Nagoya Japan by 30.

Nagoya, Japan is home to 2.3 million people. That’s

  • almost 4 times the population of Portland, Oregon
  • about 3 times the population of San Francisco, California
  • About the same population as Houston, Texas
  • Slightly fewer people than Chicago

However, Japan has less that 1% Christian population.

It is our goal to help people far from God find and follow Jesus as disciples. Therefore, we are working to start 16 churches in the city by 2030.

16 churches by 2030

Nagoya has 16 wards (or districts) which are called “ku” in Japanese. They are:

  • Atsuta-ku
  • Chikusa-ku
  • Higashi-ku
  • Kita-ku [North]
  • Meitō-ku
  • Midori-ku
  • Minami-ku [South]
  • Minato-ku
  • Mizuho-ku
  • Moriyama-ku
  • Nakagawa-ku
  • Naka-ku [Central]
  • Nakamura-ku
  • Nishi-ku
  • Shōwa-ku
  • Tempaku-ku

It is our desire to start a church in each of these wards by 2030. Currently we have already started the first church in Minato-ku (Minato ward).

This is not something we can accomplish ourselves and we are praying for laborers to join us.

What you can do

First, pray

Something practical you can do is set your phone alarm to go off at 9:38 every day. In Matthew 9:38, Jesus told his disciples to pray for the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into the harvest. No matter what stage of life you are in, you can do this. Set your alarm and be reminded to pray.

Second, come

We are actively inviting people to join us for short-term visits through our reconnaissance tours. This is a good way for you to come and see what it is like and get a feel for what life and ministry in Japan will look like.
