December 2023 Prayer Letter

The Christmas season in Japan is accompanied by Christmas lights and Christmas music. Sometimes you even hear a Christmas hymn, but most people do not understand the meaning of the lyrics.  Christmas is often marketed to couples in Japan. However, we decided to have a “gift creating” time so people could assemble a small present and scripture verses to give out in their own circles as a practical way to show God’s love to those feeling lonely this Christmas season.

Looking towards the spring recon tour, we now have 5 people from 5 different states planning to be with us. We are continually amazed at the people God has been connecting us with and believe God is answering our prayers for laborers. We have one slot left for the spring, so if you or someone you know is interested, submit your application by Dec 31st!

This past month, I was able to see the inside of a prison along with about 20 other parole officers in our district. The tour included a stop at a major shrine before lunch followed by the afternoon prison visit. This was a stark reminder of how much tradition and religion are intertwined here in Japan.

As far as our family goes, Ezra is starting to say a few words here and there and Silas and Amos are doing well in kindergarten. Our family has been reexamining the connections God has provided and are seeking to build trust and steward those friendships for God’s glory. One family connection that we have had for almost two years just recently attended our church for the first time!

Please continue to keep our kids’ program in your prayers. We would like to see at least 3-4 more people sign up (so far, we have two applications, both people who have not been to our church before).

We wish you all a merry Christmas, and a happy new year!

Yours for Japan,

James Miyashita
