CDGO Highlight: Sagamihara

This week, we will be highlighting one of  the 20 cities in Japan known as Cities Designated by Government Ordinance. Today’s city is one that is especially dear to me because it is the city I was born in.

My hometown, Sagamihara, is one of the smaller designated cities with around 720,000 people (metro Atlanta has around 500,000 people). Sagamihara is divided into three districts, known as wards – Midori-ku (Green Ward), Chuou-ku (Central Ward), and Minami-ku (South Ward). From the urbanized streets of the Central Ward, to the mountains and lakes of the Green Ward, Sagamihara has many different faces.

Quick Facts:

  • My Hometown
  • Sagamihara also has a US Army Depot that was used by the Japanese military during WWII to manufacture tanks.
  • Was on international news for mass killings

Why it’s important

While Sagamihara is a city designated by government ordinance, it is also a very special because the City Planning Act in 1956 deemed it an industrial area. Because of this, many companies have their factories in this city, meaning more people are attracted to this area for work.

Will you pray for more laborers for this city?
